Facts about Fairmount

Fairmount Cemetery has been part of Huntingburg’s landscape since 1876 and continues to grow each and every year. We are proud of how the cemetery and the surrounding area look now and have some awesome future plans that we are working hard to make a reality. (click "future projects" to see an overview of those plans)

Like most cemeteries, our operating costs usually outpace our income, especially during the spring and summer months when lawn care is at its peak. We realize that most people would have no idea how much time and money it actually takes to keep a large cemetery like Fairmount properly manicured so we decided to share that information.

We spend $14-$16 thousand dollars a year on grounds keeping. Currently we have over 6 thousand headstones, trimming alone is a major obligation.

In addition to grounds keeping we have a small number of typical operating expenses for insurance(s), phone and internet service, utilities, etc. We budget for total annual expenditures of $28-$32,000.00 a year. Fortunately, we have a group of hard working volunteers that do a lot for us or these costs would be much, much higher.

Income is completely unpredictable for us just like it is for most businesses so annual donations are what make it possible to operate from year to year.

Community involvement is essential

Our voluntary board of directors felt it was important to share these facts with you and to invite you to participate in any way you can. We wanted to inform you of our future plans and encourage you to be a part of them. Monetary donations are very important to our cemetery but there are many other ways to help. Offering goods or services, physical acts of labor, even sharing ideas for improvements can make a real difference.
